This course prepares students for the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system. This includes the anatomy of the heart, identifying the major structures of the vascular system, identifying phases of the cardiac cycle, and defining the functional properties of cardiac muscle. Students will also be able to describe the differences between normal and abnormal heart sounds, obtain basic patient vital signs, and initiate CPR and first aid when necessary. Students will also learn how EKG waveforms are produced, know the cardiac areas represented by the EKG leads, determine heart rate and rhythm, know how to set, and adjust the EKG monitor, and how to record an EKG. After the program, students are eligible to sit for the American Allied Health national certification exam.
